Drain Cleaning vs Hydro-Jetting: Which Does Your Auckland Drain Need?

Drain unblocking clears a blockage that has already formed. Drain cleaning removes the build-up that causes the next one. Hydro-jetting is a method using high-pressure water that can do either. Knowing the difference helps you ask for the right job and understand a quote. B&B Plumbing does all three across Auckland from Penrose.

Drain Unblocking: Fixing a Blockage That’s Already There

When water is backing up or has stopped draining, you need drain unblocking. The method depends on the blockage. Soft blockages near an access point can be cleared with a drain machine or rods. Roots, packed silt, and hard grease usually need hydro-jetting.

Drain Cleaning: Stopping the Next Blockage

Drain cleaning is preventive. It removes grease, silt, and scale from a line that’s still running but narrowing. It’s most useful for commercial kitchens, cesspits, grease traps and stormwater drains that collect debris, where a regular schedule costs less than emergency callouts.

Hydro-Jetting: When High-Pressure Water Is the Right Tool

A hydro-jet truck feeds a hose with a high-pressure nozzle through the drain. The water cuts through roots, grease and silt and flushes them out, usually without digging. It suits stubborn blockages and full-line cleans at homes, commercial sites and industrial sites. It isn’t right for every pipe. On old, cracked or collapsed lines, a camera inspection should come first, so we know what the water is going to meet.

How to Tell Which One You Need

  • Water backing up right now: drain unblocking, often by hydro-jetting.
  • A slow drain that keeps coming back: a CCTV inspection to find the cause, then a clean or a repair.
  • A café, restaurant or takeaway kitchen: scheduled drain cleaning and grease trap servicing.
  • Big trees near the sewer line: roots usually need hydro-jetting, and the pipe needs checking afterwards.
  • Flooding after heavy rain: stormwater drain cleaning, plus a check of sumps and soak holes.

What Auckland Drains Need

Older suburbs such as Remuera, Mt Eden, Grey Lynn and Onehunga often have clay or concrete pipes where roots get in. Stormwater lines collect silt and leaves, and Auckland’s heavy rain finds the ones that haven’t been cleared. Around Penrose and the neighbouring industrial areas, commercial kitchens put grease into the lines every day. We work on all three, and the right job is different each time.

Drain Cleaning and Hydro-Jetting FAQ

Does Hydro-Jetting Damage Pipes?

Used correctly on sound pipe, it doesn’t. The risk is on pipes that are already cracked or fragile, which is why we run a camera first when there’s any doubt.

How Often Should Drains Be Cleaned?

Commercial grease traps typically need servicing every three to six months. Home drains don’t need routine cleaning unless they keep blocking, and if they do, the better question is why.

How Long Does Drain Cleaning Take?

Most jobs take one to two hours, depending on the length of the line and what’s in it.
